Definition: Data ecosystem

A data ecosystem is (in macroeconomic terms) an overall system in which data is exchanged across the boundaries of individual organizations.

The exchange across organizational boundaries can be structured or case-by-case, optimized or suffer from high transaction costs or similar hurdles. If the data ecosystem is oriented towards efficient structures (namely data spaces), efficiency gains can be achieved that provide tangible macroeconomic and stakeholder-level benefits. One such advantage can be the strengthening of digital self-determination while at the same time enabling the use of data.
